Sola, two other medical colleges denied recognition
Ahmedabad: Medical Council of India (MCI) refused to grant
recognition to Sola Medical College in Ahmedabad and Gotri
Medical College in Vadodara on Thursday. In addition,
K J Mehta Institute of Medical Science in Bhavnagar was
also denied recognition even after MCI carried out inspection
thrice, following a Supreme Court (SC) order. While in
case of Sola college MCI cited poor infrastructure as
the reason for refusal, it did not issue an official statement
regarding the college in Gotri. Sola Medical College was
among the several medical colleges across the country
that were de-recognized after the suspension of MCI’s
former chairman Dr Ketan Desai on charges of bribery.
State government had moved the Gujarat High Court against
the decision of de-recognition of Sola college. HC had
thus asked MCI to carry out inspection at Sola Medical
College. However, after third inspection, MCI still rejected
the college’s recognition. In its inspection report,
MCI said that there was no issue with the college staff
strength, but infrastructure was too poor to run better
administration, said an official from state health department.
KJ Mehta Institute of Medical Science, which was also
de-recognized by MCI, had moved Delhi High Court against
the decision, against which the council moved the SC.
However, the apex court ordered MCI to conduct inspection
and grant recognition as per the rule.
We are still awaiting recognition. While it has issued
written statements to respective colleges, explaining
the grounds for de-recognition, we are yet to receive
any such communication, said an official from KJ Mehta
Institute of Medical Science.
Admission on vacant med seats from Sept 26:
Admission on seats vacant in medical and para-medical
courses will be undertaken from September 26 to 29. These
include 22 seats in government medical colleges and five
in government dental colleges, among other seats of para-medical
courses. The seats would have been filled, had Sola and
Gotri medical colleges, and KJ Mehta Institute in Bhavnagar
received recognition. We were hopeful of filling up these
seats through reshuffling, said an Admission Committee
for Medical and Para-medical Courses official.
