CBSE aptitude tests to aid Class XI choices

Mumbai: Are you one of those brave CBSE students who have decided to give the Class X board exams a miss and go along with CBSEs new reforms, which involve a system of continuous and comprehensive evaluation all year long If so, youre probably wondering which stream to pick in junior college, a decision usually based on ones score in the board exams.

In a bid to help students figure out where they are headed in the absence of board exams, the CBSE board launched its Students Global Aptitude Index (SGAI)a battery of aptitude tests meant to gauge both aptitude and interest in various subjectsearlier this week. A circular released by the CBSE board earlier this week, the SGAI is finally ready for launch after a rigorous process of standardisation. The aptitude tests are optional, and are on offer for Rs 100. The CBSE board will conduct its first ever aptitude test on January 15, 2011.

These tests will help parents and teachers better understand a childs abilities. It will also help students convince their parents of where their interests lie, so the choice of stream in Classes XI and XII is not based on societal pressure, a CBSE official told TOI from Delhi. The aptitude tests have been customised to suit the Indian context. The board conducted pilot tests on students from 100 private, public and aided CBSE schools.
According to the CBSE board, unlike conventional aptitude tests which indicate the profession, CBSEs tests will instead point to the stream a student is oriented towards in Classes XI and XII.

Deepshikha Srivastava, principal of Rajhans Vidyalaya, Andheri, feels the tests are the need of the hour. Parents and colleges want to know if a student is good at a particular subject. The aptitude tests will certainly help clear any apprehensions on that count, she adds.

But not everyone favoursthe move. Aptitude tests are only meant to gauge a students abilities. But the CBSE board says they may be used with grades or board scores while applying for Class XI. This means colleges will judge students based on their performance in the aptitude test, says education consultant Jeevan Konnikkara.
