IIT,TIFR tie up for new maths centre
Mumbai: Two premier research institutes in the citythe
Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B ) and Tata
Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) will now jointly
offer maths at a new school that will be set up on the
Powai campus.
The National Centre for Mathematics, as it will be named, will
be modelled on the worlds first mathematics centrethe
Oberwolfach Mathematics Research Institute in Germany.
With over 100 active mathematicians and 70 research scholars, Mumbai
has the largest concentration of mathematicians in the
country.
The centre, yet to come up, will conduct research-level
workshops and foundation courses, hold national and international
seminars and develop instructional material for school
teachers and facilitate research collaborations among
scientists.
The centre will cater to anyone who is a mathematicianwhether
a student or a researcher. While there are conferences
for mathematicians, there is no organized platform for
them to come together. Mathematics centres have already
been established across the world in countries such as
China, France and Canada, said J K Verma from the department
of mathematics, Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay.
