IISER to set up 5 magnet schools
New Delhi: The five Indian Institutes of Science Education
& Research (IISER) have decided to set up science
magnet schools on their campus under the Jawahar Navodaya
Vidyalaya scheme for integrated science education from
the school to the university level.
In the meeting of IISER directors that was also attended
by HRD minister Kapil Sibal, the government agreed to open
the doors of the premier institutes for students passing
out of IB schools in the country. The IB school diploma
will be recognized as an eligible course for admission
to the five-year integrated MS programme.
Each IISER will have to formulate its internal system
of equivalence. There are 72 IB schools in India, and 68
offer diploma programmes, which is equivalent to the +2
system of the CBSE. But IISERs will persist with the prevalent
system of admission. Students make the grade on the basis
of IIT-JEE, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana and the
1% toppers of the central or state board class XII merit
list.
The meeting also decided to give flexibility to each IISER
on formulating a policy on PhD. Though the proposal for
a 4+1+1. 5-year pattern for an integrated BSc and PhD was
not opposed in spirit, the directors felt that each IISER
should enjoy certain flexibility.
The present system of 3+2+3 years for obtaining a BSMS
degree at the end of the fifth year, negotiation for a
PhD at the end of the fourth year, and completion of the
PhD at the end of the eighth year should be allowed. If
a student shows extraordinary merit and he could be given
the choice to finish the degree early.
Igniting Minds.
Each IISER will have to formulate its internal system
of equivalence Institutes will develop model vans for
propagation of science education Existing system of admission
will continue Demand to make schools come under separate
Act of Parliament.
