Test Plus-II aptitude before Class X
Chennai: Students looking for guidance on which stream
to pursue after Class X now have a little help from the
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). In addition
to holding a pre-university course, the board will also
administer an aptitude test for the interested.
The CBSE has replaced a comprehensive Class X board examination
with a simpler test and a grading system.
Authorities of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Chennai, said such aptitude
tests could be administered by independent organisations
as well but the central body was stepping in to make it
easier for all schools.
Some like C Sathish, senior principal, RMK Group of Schools, welcomed
the move. It is definitely useful since students tend to
be unsure of whether theyre better suited for science, commerce
or the humanities after class X. Often they make these
choices based on what their friends or parents say. Students
even tend to change their streams midway when they find
they dont like what they are studying. Aptitude tests give
an insight into childrens capabilities. I think every child
should make use of it, he said.
Teachers felt the tests would give an idea of where a
students interests laywhether he/she had a mechanical
or artistic bent of mind, for instance. Sathish said: The
aptitude tests have nothing to do with their academics
or performance in school. It is just a facility being offered
for those who want to know where their strengths lie. It
is not compulsory.
The CBSE, in its latest circular to affiliated schools,
said students could take the exam for English, Hindi,
maths, science and social science for a question paper
of 100 marks each. They could appear in one or more subjects
depending on their choice. The fee is likely to be between
Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 for the pen-and-paper test scheduled
to be held in May/June next year. |
