Enthusiastic FYJC students make the most of Day One
Mumbai: Friday marked the first day of college for lakhs
of FYJC students in the city. While a handful of colleges
had begun lectures for their FYJC batch immediately after
the fifth merit list was out, most did so on September
3 and were happy to interact with an enthusiastic batch
on day one.
The students were more than happy to start a new chapter
in their academic life and even the professors were very
excited to teach, said Marie Fernandes, principal of St
Andrews College. She added that students attended in full
strength throughout the day. We had proper lectures all
day today, but the batch was still lively while leaving
in the evening.
Some colleges also had their orientation programmes on
Friday to introduce the new batch to their institution. We
had a very interactive session on Friday and students
showed enthusiasm to learn more. It shows that these students
have waited really long and that they dont want to waste
any more time, said Vijay Joshi, principal of K J Somaiya
College. He added that proper classes will start Monday
onwards.
Even though most colleges still have some seats vacant
in each stream, nobody wants to wait for these to fill
up for lectures to start. We wasted enough time during
the court battle and admissions. Waiting to fill just 5-10
% of seats would have been a waste of time again. So, we
decided to start lectures after the fifth merit list itself,
said Manju Nichani, principal of K C College. Fr Frazer
Mascarenhas, principal of St Xaviers College said, We will
hold remedial classes for the late entrants so that they
catch up with the rest of their batch mates once they
start.
Students, on the other hand, showed enthusiasm in every
sense. After a long time, lectures didnt seem a boring idea,
said Supriya Mehta, a student at K C College. Most were
also anticipating ragging by seniors on day one, but were
happy to not face any humiliation.
Hopefully our seniors will interact and gel with us soon,
said another FYJC student.
Students Bank On Offline Admissions
Junior college applicants are making the best of offline
admissions, said principals. After five rounds of online
admissions for FYJC that ended on August 31 students are
now trying their luck offline to bag a seat in a college
of their choice. We have approximately 30-35 seats left
in both science and commerce, but received over 120 separate
applications for both the streams, said Marie Fernandes,
principal of St Andrew's College.
This just shows that the cut-off for the merit list that
colleges will put up on September 6 for the offline applications
will not be very low either. We are expecting the cut-off
to be as much as 76-78 % even offline, said Fernandes. |
