4 colleges move up NAAC ladder with A’ rating

Pune: Three colleges from the city and one from neighbouring Pimpri have moved up the rating ladder, in the re-accreditation process carried out by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, by securing an ‘A’ grade. The rating signifies a ‘very good’ performance descriptor as per norms laid by NAAC.

The colleges are the Karve Institute of Social Service, Modern college of arts, science and commerce, Abasaheb Garware college and Mahatma Phule Vidyalaya, Pimpri.

The executive committee of the Bangalore-based NAAC — which is an autonomous quality assurance agency set up by the University Grants Commission (UGC) for assessing and rating higher education institutions — cleared the re-accreditation proposals of six universities and 100 colleges across the country during its 52nd meeting held on Sunday. Seven of the 100 re-accredited colleges are from Pune and Pimpri.

Karve Institute of Social Service (KISS) and Progressive Education Society’s Modern college of arts, science and commerce both were rated ‘B++’ in the accreditation process carried out in 2003-04 by the NAAC.

According to the NAAC scoring pattern, which prevailed then, a B++ rating signified an institutional score between 80 and 85 on a scale of 100 for seven key parameters viz: curricular aspects; teaching, learning and evaluation; research, consultancy and extension; infrastructure and learning resources; student support and progression; governance and leadership and innovative practices.

The NAAC later introduced a fresh assessment and accreditation process, leading to cumulative grade points average (CGPA) score forming the basis for the final grade and performance descriptor.

The re-accreditation process focuses not only on the seven key performance parameters but also includes the impact of the last assessment and the consequential quality improvement achieved by the concerned college, thereafter.

KISS now has the highest CGPA score (3.29), on a scale of 4, among the four colleges from the city and Pimpri, while Modern college secured a 3.15 CGPA score.

The other colleges Maharashtra Education Society’s Abasaheb Garware college and Rayat Shikshan Sanstha’s Mahatma Phule Vidyalaya, Pimpri, which were rated ‘B+’ (institutional score 75-80) in 2003-04, have now moved to ‘A’ rating with 3.15 and 3.13 CGPA scores respectively.

Fergusson college has retained its ‘A’ rating with a CGPA of 3.26. The Khadki Education Society’s Tikaram Jagannath college of arts, science and commerce and Manghanmal Udharam college of commerce at Pimpri have retained their ‘B’ rating with CGPA scores of 2.67 and 2.21 respectively.
