Varsity scraps NRI quota for BBA, BCA
& BCom courses
Ahmedabad: In a slew of decisions, Gujarat University
on Tuesday scrapped the NRI quota of seats from BBA, BCA
and self-financed commerce colleges to prevent institutions
from exploiting the students by charging exorbitant fees.
The decision was taken at a meeting of GU’s academic
council on Tuesday. It will be ratified at a meeting of
the syndicate on Wednesday. The council also introduced
the system of external courses in these colleges. The
move is likely to come as a setback for these colleges,
which offer prime career options to commerce stream students
and had recently demanded to raise their fee. The NRI
quota comprised 15 percent of total seats, which are around
1,000. On each NRI seat, the college charged between Rs
50,000 and Rs 2 lakh per annum per student.
GU vice-chancellor Dr Parimal Trivedi told TOI, “Few
NRI students would take admissions under this quota. So
to fill it, colleges used to take in regular students
and charge fees arbitrarily. They were making money out
of it.” NRI quota was introduced in these colleges
in 1999. In all these years, of the total 150 seats reserved
for NRI, barely three percent were actually NRIs. There
are nine BBA and BCA colleges under GU.
From the next academic year, external courses will be
offered so that working people can simultaneously do courses
in management and computers. |
