MBBS grads to serve in rural areas
from 2011
Ahmedabad: A few years of service in rural area and fresh
MBBS graduates can get a step closer to their dream post-graduate
degree.
In an effort to improve medical facility in rural areas,
Gujarat University medical faculty has decided to implement
the latest amendment introduced by Medical Council of
India (MCI) and the Centre.
From 2011, MBBS graduates, who have served in rural area
will get additional points, which will be considered for
the merit list for their post graduate courses. “We
have implemented MCI’s recommendation, which is
a win-win situation for both, the students as well as
people in rural areas. The scheme is that for one year
of service in a rural area, a PG applicant will get an
additional 10 per cent of his entrance test score. For
two years of working in a rural area, the student will
get 20 per cent and for a service of three years the student
will get 30 per cent of the total test score as additional
marks”, said HP Bhalodia, dean of medical faculty,
Gujarat University.
Medical facilities in rural areas have been a major concern
for authorities as the number of doctors serving there
has been decreasing. “The faculty wanted to introduce
the scheme from this year, but since PG medical admissions
have already started, the scheme will be introduced from
2011”, he added.
Earlier this year, MCI also introduced the Rural MBBS,
where special seats for candidates from rural areas, who
have to serve in rural areas for at least 10 years before
applying for a PG course.
