GU decentralises FY, SY exams
Ahmedabad: College exams have been decentralised. More
than 250 colleges affiliated to Gujarat University have
been empowered to conduct first and second year exams.
Till date, all exams were conducted by GU. This decision
was taken at GU’s academic council meeting held
on Tuesday. The move, said sources, is aimed at reducing
administrative burden on GU exam administrators. “From
next year, question papers will be set by GU, but rest
of the work, including evaluation, result declaration
and distribution of marksheet will be done by individual
colleges,” said vicechancellor of GU, Parimal Trivedi.
Most universities across the country follow this norm.
A decade ago, second year exams were entrusted to colleges
but owing to goof ups GU had to take the powers back.
However, exams of professional courses like BBA, BCA will
continue to be conducted by the university. That apart,
the third year exams will also be conducted by GU and
central assessment will be conducted.
“Exams for first year — scheduled to start
from March 30 — will be conducted by the colleges.
This time, GU will send all answer sheets to professors
for evaluation. However, from next year the colleges will
take over all aspects of exam administration,” added
Trivedi.
Fee hike, more payment seats in store for PG courses:
There is some good and bad news for post graduation students.
Good news first: A portion of PG seats in colleges affiliated
to GU will become payment seats soon. This means that
while some seats will continue to be allotted according
to academic merit, the rest will be given to students
with less marks for a higher fee. This is much like the
prevalent system in self-financed colleges. The existing
fee for PG courses ranges from Rs 500 to 1,000 per term.
The payment seats, say sources, will be between Rs 2,500
and 3,000. This model is already being followed by Saurashtra
University in Rajkot and SP University in Vallabh Vidyanagar.
Now, the bad news: Fees for PG courses are likely to be
hiked to Rs 1,500 to 2,000 for every term. GU authorities
also formed a four-member committee to probe into a viable
method to implement choicebased grading system for external
students of PG courses.
School of Communications launched:
Centre for Development Communication (CDC) and faculty
of journalism have been merged to launch School of Communications.
It will introduce short term courses. The academic council
which announced this decision, also increased the fee
given to professors examining PhD thesis to Rs 1,000.
