HRD readies plan to shift students
of doomed univs
Bangalore: Coming to the aid of 1.32 lakh students, who
study in the 44 deemed universities recently derecognized
across the country, the HRD ministry task force headed
by P N Tandon has readied an action plan for relocating
these students, pending the apex court’s final verdict.
Accordingly, all existing deemed university students should
revert to status quo ante i.e. the status of an affiliated
college of a state university, so that they will be able
to complete their courses and obtain the degree from the
affiliating university. Simply put, this means the deemed
universities, which were stripped of their status late
last year, will come under the purview of the respective
state universities. However, the task force’s action
plan will be implemented only after the Supreme Court
gives its verdict.
Last month, the SC had ordered status quo for these institutions
but issued notices to them asking them to explain their
stand within 4-6 weeks. Parallely, the HRD ministry constituted
the task force, essentially to plan the future course
of action for the students in these deemed universities.
The SC had given clear directions to safeguard the interests
of students. “It is the responsibility of the UGC
and the states to come to the aid of the students. However,
the plight of these students must not be allowed to become
a reason for considering the possibility of undeserving
institutions retaining the status of a university,’’
said the task force report, a copy of which is with STOI.
If the institution is not able to obtain affiliation following
the withdrawal of the deemed university status, every
effort should be made to facilitate migration/re-enrolment
in equivalent or similar courses in other institutions,
the report states.
Govt forms panel on all-India CET
Hyderabad: The government on Saturday set up a panel of
vice-chancellors to study a national-level common entrance
test for admission into professional courses and optimum
use of the infrastructure in universities. The panel would
also suggest ways for the migration of students from one
university to another. |
