BJ medical college could soon be like
AIIMS
Pune: Plans are afoot to upgrade the city’s B J
Medical College and Sassoon hospital to the level of Delhi’s
All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Upgradation
to this level would mean more superspecialty as well as
sub-superspecialty medical services under one roof at
Sassoon.
The joint director of medical education and research has
directed the dean of B J Medical College to submit a plan
to this effect. Confirming this, BJMC and Sassoon hospital
dean Arun Jamkar said the plan would cost approximately
Rs 350 crore on execution.
AIIMS has access to infrastructure and facilities enjoyed
by few other institutes. Such a status for BJMC is likely
to attract highly-qualified professionals besides quality
medical care for all, Jamkar said. “Though we would
like all health facilities in the state to be improved,
upgrading one to the level of AIIMS will be immensely
beneficial for people not just from Maharashtra but from
other states too,” he added.
AIIMS was established by an Act of Parliament in the ’50s.
Its management is overseen by a governing body chaired
by the Union health minister. This ensures access to central
funds on a substantial scale, and also without having
to go through the usual bureaucratic procedures. The Union
Cabinet, on February 5, 2009, approved two more AIIMS-like
medical institutions — one in West Bengal and the
other in Uttar Pradesh, at a cost of Rs 823 crore each.
The Cabinet had also decided to upgrade five government
medical colleges in five states to the level of AIIMS.
“We have started framing the proposal as directed
by the DMER and the blueprint will be submitted in a few
days. We hope that it will be translated into reality,”
said Jamkar. |
