Walchand College to teach hydraulics

Kirloskar Group Will Help Introduce Course In BE Mechanical Stream

Kirloskarwadi: Kirloskar Brothers Limited (KBL) the flagship company of the Rs 7,000 crore Kirloskar Brothers group, will contribute towards the introduction of specialisation course in hydraulics in the BE-Mechanical stream in the Walchand College of Engineering in Sangli.

The company introduced a similar course at the College of Engineering, Pune, (COEP) three years ago. “The company has decided to focus on promotion of excellence in its centenary year celebration,” said Sanjay Kirloskar, chairman and managing director, KBL, while speaking to reporters at the centenary celebration of KBL at Kirloskarwadi, around 225 km from Pune on Wednesday.

The industrial township, set up on 32 acres, is one of the oldest industrial townships in the country like Walchandnagar in Sangli and Tata Nagar in Jamshedpur.

Union agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, state forest minister Patangrao Kadam, state rural development minister Jayant Patil and water resources (Krishna Valley Development Corporation) Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar, were present on the occasion. Pawar laid the foundation stone for the upcoming museum at Kirloskarwadi, which will display the evolution of machinery in the last 100 years.

Kirloskar said, “The company will be instrumental in designing the curriculum for a specialisation course and will also provide faculty. Pump manufacturing is a challenging job, as high-end pumps are being manufactured across the world, and in the coming years we want to see KBL as one the top five manufacturers in the global market.” He added that as pump technology was advancing, the need for high-end sets was growing and people who specialise in this faculty were needed.

“As long as the need to move fluids from one place to another exists, the demand and technology of pumps will continue to advance,” he said. These pumps are deployed in sectors like irrigation, agriculture, water resources and power. Kirloskar said that the company would organise road shows depicting the success of the company in projects such as the deployment of 3000 hp irrigation pump — the largest ever in the country — at the Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada in Gujarat, to promote this specialisation.

On the occasion Sharad Pawar released a book on the history of Kirloskarwadi titled ‘Katha Kirloskarwadi Chi’, written by Savita Bhave. A special film ‘Adhi Bij Ekale’, by Sudhir Moghe, on the industrial township, was also released. State rural development minister Jayant Patil unveiled a centenary product iCP (Innovative range of Chemical Process Pumps) for the chemical process industry. The commercial production of the pump will be started this year. The product has features like non-metallic components and zero losses, zero maintenance and zero leakages.
