No new admissions for 3 med colleges

Ahmedabad: The sword of Damocles is hanging over the fate of three medical colleges in Gujarat. The Medical Council of India (MCI) has denied these colleges permission for new admissions in the academic year 2010-11. The decision came after MCI inspected medical colleges across the country during January and February.

In Gujarat, MCI inspectors found administrative anomalies in three colleges - Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences in Bhuj, KJ Mehta General Hospital & College of Medical Sciences in Bhavnagar, Government Medical College of Rajkot. The three colleges have no less than 350 medical seats.

With MCI putting a hold on their future academic activities, the college administrations are in a quandary. Though, there is a slim ray of hope, with MCI giving a final chance to salvage the situation. The college administrations will have to complete compliance with all norms within a month. After this, MCI will conduct a second inspection of the colleges and then during a meeting of its review committee the fate of these colleges shall be decided.

According to MCI sources, the KJ Mehta General Hospital & College of Medical Sciences, Amargadh, Bhavnagar with 150 seats was set up in 2009. MCI inspectors found the institute suffering from deficiencies, like 50 per cent less staff, 50 per cent shortfall in occupancy and resident doctors’ shortfall.

The Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhuj with 150 seats too was set up in 2009. Here, the MCI officials said: “Teaching staff was 50 per cent less than the required also there was a 10 per cent shortfall in number of resident doctors. Even in hospital, occupancy of patients was 40 per cent instead of the necessary 80 per cent.”
In Government Medical College of Rajkot, MCI had increased seat capacity from 50 to 100 in 2009. However, MCI has put a stop to admission in the 50 seats after finding 50 per cent less resident doctors than required.

Aal izz well for some!

There is, however, good news for institutes like Bhavnagar Government Medical College which has been allowed to retain its 100 seats. Last year the college had been given additional 50 seats, taking the total number to 100. After inspection MCI found the college infrastructure satisfactory and thus allowed it to retain its increased seats. Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) and AMC MET Medical College, LG Hospital Campus, Maninagar, also have been allowed to retain its 150 seats each.
