Education in Gujarat deteriorating
Ahmedabad: Of the 5,880 teachers in the 711 primary schools
in Ahmedabad city, only 55 teachers were paid salaries
as per government norms. In Vadnagar Technical Institute
only seven students cleared their Bachelor of Engineering
Examination.
These facts were highlighted by leader of opposition,Shaktisinh
Gohil, while speaking on The Indian Institute of Teacher
Education,Gujarat Bill.Gohil accused the state government
of commercialisation of education. The Bill was later passed
with majority with opposition of the Congress.
Gujarat which was once reputed for imparting quality technical
education has now reached such a stage that the overall
pass percentage of BE was less then 40 per cent and in
Vadnagar, the constituency of chief minister Narendra Modi, only
seven students cleared their BE exams and the overall
pass out percentage was less then three, he added.
Gohil said that the government had a committee for professional
courses, but despite this several students were suffering
due to delay in admission. This delay,he claimed, was done
to benefit self-financed colleges.
Earlier commencing the debate on the Bill,Arjun Modhwadia
focused his speech on the information sought under Right
to Information Act.He alleged that very few teachers were
paid salaries according to government rules.
He further alleged that in 18 schools there were teachers
who were not even graduates. As against the ratio of one
teacher for 23 students in the country Gujarat had one
teacher for every 41 students which was just better then
Uttar Pradesh. He said that according to a survey 34 per
cent of the colleges in Gujarat were below average. This
was 11 per cent in Andhra Pradesh and 17 in Punjab.Modhwadia
also made scathing remarks on deteriorating standard of
vice-chancellors being appointed to various universities.
