Symbiosis to set up research and innovation institute
Pune: A research and innovation institute for promoting
inter-disciplinary studies,a charitable hospital with
a centre of excellence in minimal invasive surgery,a new
community college and merit-cum-means scholarships,running
up to Rs 1 crore each year for the economically backward
students opting for conventional as well as open distance
learning courses,are some of the main activities planned
by the Symbiosis Society over the next one year.
These year-long academic activities and social projects
have been planned to mark the 75th birthday of Symbiosis
founder and president S B Mujumdar,which falls on July
31.
Speaking to reporters here on Friday,Symbiosis principal
director Vidya Yeravdekar said,The proposed research and
innovation institute would come up at our integrated campus
at Lavle.It will purely focus on research-based inter-disciplinary
studies in all the faculties offered by Symbiosis,i.e.management,health
sciences,engineering,law,humanities,media and design and
information technology. An advisory board comprising of
eminent personalities will govern the institute,she said.
Yeravdekar said,We have tied up with the Hyderabad-based
Care Hospitals for the ambitious Medicity project that
is to come up across a 30-acre land at Lavle,involving
a 200-bed centre of excellence in minimal invasive surgery
and a 500-bed charity hospital,eventually leading to full-fledged
medical college.Plans are also afoot to explore integrated
medicine activity.
According to Swati Mujumdar,who heads the distance learning
projects,Symbiosis will start a new community college
at Pirangut to add to the existing ones at Thergaon,Paud
and Maangao,besides starting a Symbiosis Vocational Junior
College from September for Stds XI and XII studies in
vocational streams.
The community college scheme is being driven by the Indira
Gandhi National Open University and the Ministry of Employment
and Labour with a view to equip school and college dropouts
from rural areas with job-oriented skills as well as conventional
education.
Mujumdar said,Human Resource Development (HRD) minister
Kapil Sibal will attend an international conference of
open and distance learning which has been planned for
February 21 to 23,2011,with support from the UNESCO and
the Commonwealth of Learning.
Symbiosis vice-chancellor Mrunal Raaste said,An international
conference on higher education with special reference
to management education will be conducted on October 14
and 15.The focus areas of this event would be building
world class universities in Asia,development of faculty
for educating global citizens and Indias policies on internationalisation
of education.
