Marginal rise in this yr’s cut-offs

Mumbai: Most colleges in the city declared the first cut-off list for the minority quota, on Wednesday. Most students rushed in to begin the admission procedure, and a few colleges also put up a second cut-off list, the same day. With the exception of the commerce stream, there was only a marginal difference in this year’s cut-offs when compared to those of 2009-10. In fact, in many colleges, the entry-level marks for the arts and science streams have fallen. This, despite the fact that most students have scored well because of the best-five policy.

“Our cut-off for the commerce stream has risen by 2%,’’said Vijayam Srinivasan, vice-principal of Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, a Gujarati linguistic minority institution. Dr Marie Fernandes, the principal of St Andrews College, observed a similar trend. “While commerce has risen from 78.46% to 80%, the cut-off for humanities has fallen by 2%. Science remains the same,’’ she said.

With commerce becoming an increasingly popular choice among students, principals said they had no choice but to increase the cut-off level. “Students percentages have risen dramatically, and it is inevitable that the cut-offs will be considerably higher,’’ said Dr Harsha Mehta, principal of SIES College, a South Indian linguistic minority institution.

Bina Gole, the principal of Swami Vivekanand College said: “The demand for commerce is much higher this year. Last year, admissions for the Sindhi linguistic minority in commerce closed at about 60%. This year, it is as high as 71%.’’

Jai Hind, K C and H R Colleges, all Sindhi linguistic minority institutes, have already declared their second list of minority cut-offs. The commerce cut-offs at H R College have, however, dropped from 70% to 68%. A few colleges have scheduled their minority quota admissions for a later date.
