52 students lose seats due to IIT blunder
JAB HURTS
New Delhi: To the shock and dismay of 52 students who
have cleared the IIT-JEE exam this year and were assigned
architecture and design courses, the Indian Institute
of Technology’s (IIT) Joint Admission Board (JAB)
has cancelled their allotments a day before they were
to deposit their fees.
IIT authorities say these students had not cleared the
architecture/design aptitude test—a separate exam
for those seeking admission to such courses—but
were “inadvertently included in seat allotment for
BArch and BDes courses’’.
Now, the IITs have called another set of 52 students and
offered them admission in BArch and BDes. Those whose
admissions were cancelled have lost the chance of joining
other institutes as they did not go for counselling after
getting into the IIT list.
Many students had cleared AIEEE and other entrance exams,
but will lose a year. They have threatened to drag the
IITs to court. JAB has said the “52 candidates who
got an allotment earlier do not get any allotment now’’,
but will be considered for the second allotment. “Something
will be done,’’ said T Natarajan of JAB. But
another source said: “There could be hundreds who
have scored more than these 52. A list of the scores of
those who appeared for architecture and design needs to
be published.’
