University seats are here, but where are the marks?
Bangalore: Students of Visvesvaraya Technological University
(VTU) are in a fix again. While the last day for filing
application forms in foreign universities for higher studies
is next week, many of them are yet to get their results.
When the eighth semester results were released a week
ago, some students were yet to get results of a few subjects.
It was marked as zero, along with a ‘W’ written
next to it, which stood for withheld.
The students, shocked at the result sheet, approached
the VTU officials. “Around 10 of my friends from
MVIT faced this. Later, I came to know that students from
M S Ramaiah and PESIT were also affected,” said
a student.
“I have got my seat in Florida for my masters programme.
I am supposed to send the markscard by July 15, 2010.
But VTU says it will take a week’s time to sort
this out. In that case, I will lose my seat,” he
said.
What is more worrying is the ‘zero’ tag in
their markscard. “They have put zero even for papers
that have no external, but only internals. In future,
if somebody sees the zero, they might think students couldn’t
clear the paper,” said a parent.
Meanwhile, VTU officials said they are aware of this and
have been working on it. “The problem is with decoding.
Codes of some papers are mismatched and, therefore, the
computer rejects it. Now, we have to look for them manually.
We have to get the original answerscripts. There are around
seven valuation centres and we are trying to retrieve
the papers. It will take a week’s time. It is unfortunate,”
said Vasudev Murthy, special officer, VTU.
While time is crucial for these students, offices will
be closed today as it is a second Saturday.
