DTE helpline fails to help students

Mumbai: For 25-year-old Sharad Raje (name changed), his wish to get a seat in a city college for a diploma in engineering seems to be getting delayed with every passing day. Having a few queries, he is finding it difficult to get through the helpline numbers provided by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) on its website and on the booklet given to students who wish to apply. “All four numbers are busy all day long. How do we reach them?’’ said a frustrated Raje.

Students applying for this diploma are required to submit their documents at an Application Receipt Centre (ARC), only after which their forms are accepted. “For every minor detail, we are asked to get in touch with the DTE and get a response to our queries. At the ARC, I met others who were facing a similar problem,’’ added Raje. With his office timings binding him down, he is unable to approach the DTE directly for the information he needs.

“My daughter’s application has been left pending because I need to submit a noncreamy layer (income) certificate at the ARC. I have already applied for the certificate but the process will take some time. I have been trying to contact the DTE for quite some time now but every time, I’m welcomed by a busy tone. I have sent three emails but still haven’t got a reply,’’ said Pradeep Thakur, a businessman.

On being asked about the helpline numbers, director of DTE, S Mahajan, said, “We receive calls continuously and are attending to all of them. Two of the phones are in my office itself and we have people attending to all the calls. We have always been more than happy to help students clarify any queries. Those who can’t get through the helpline numbers are welcome to come and meet us personally.’’

The last date for submission has been extended to July 14 and these applicants are hoping to get a response to their queries before the deadline. “I work six days a week. The only day I’m free is a Sunday and the directorate is shut on that day. It is not easy to get the information I need as even the website is not very helpful. We are all hoping to see our names on the July 19 list,’’ said Samir Munshi, another applicant.
