Schools scramble to upgrade to sr secondary level
New Delhi: It seems no one wants to be left out from Class X boards optional scheme to be implemented from this year. If numbers are any indication , the decision of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), at the behest of ministry of human resource development (MHRD), to scrap Class X board exams from 2010 has triggered a 25% increase in applications by secondary schools seeking an extension up to senior secondary level or Class XII.
And, with increase in fresh applications for the 2010-2011 academic session, CBSEs affiliation department is having a field day processing the applications seeking an upgradation from secondary level to senior secondary . The board received 590 applications for the academic year 2010-2011 against 470 for 2009-2010 an increase of 25%.
In September 2009, Kapil Sibal, minister HRD, announced that Class X boards would be made optional, along with introduction of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in schools, among a plethora of measures in school education . Following the announcement , a circular was issued by CBSE in 2009, stating that it was compulsory for secondary school students to take either a written or online examination, as they will be leaving secondary school after Class X.
According to a senior official of CBSE, The Class X boards have been scrapped, but only for schools which have classes till XII. Students of secondary schools, where the highest class is X, would still have to sit for the exams and qualify them for a seat in Class XI. Now, it seems schools up to Class X do not want to miss out on the opportunity of the optional scheme for the board exams.
