Doomed univs got top NAAC grades
Mumbai: For years, students have relied on the ratings given by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) to Indian institutes to zero in on the best university. However, NAAC’s somewhat generous assessment has lately been questioned after 44 deemed universities were stripped of their varsity status.
Take for instance, Thanjavur-based Pooniya Ramajayam Institute of Science and Technology, which boasts of an A grade from NAAC, or Gurukul Kangri, Haridwar, which has been rated as a premier institute and has been given four stars during its last assessment. In fact, of the 44 deemed universities lately in the news, all those accredited have top rate assessment reports. Shockingly, none of them has been rated below B.
H Ranganath, NAAC director, defended his stand by saying, “The parameters followed by NAAC are probably different from the ones adopted by the ministry of human resource development and the University Grants Commission.’’ The statement in itself is a contradiction as the UGC is a body under the ministry and the NAAC is a wing of the UGC. Also, Ranganath added that some of these institutes were accredited as colleges and not as deemed universities. Regarding NAAC rating deemed universities, he had little to offer, except that he “is new to NAAC’’. Ranganath joined the accreditation body 18 months ago after his short stint as the vice-chancellor of Bangalore University.
The brewing controversy has now forced NAAC to hold back the inspection reports of several deemed universities which had applied for accreditation. A few months ago, a team visited D Y Patil Deemed University, Kolhapur, and sources said that the visiting team “raved about the state of facilities and curricula’’ there. Now with the Kolhapur University and several other institutes being stripped of their status, NAAC is unclear of what stand to take.
