LPG stove for blind, silicon locket
among new IIT-B creations
Mumbai: A navigator for the city, the design of the skybus
and the software behind the operations of railway management
: these innovations with common features are quietly making
their way into Mumbai.
All these patents held by the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay
have now been catalogued under the title of IIT-B Technologies
and will be released on Sunday. Several innovations carried
out in the area of healthcare, energy and environment,
information and communication technologies, transportation
, rural development and a short brief about them is mentioned
in the book.
Some technologies have changed the manner in which people
carry on with their dayto-day activities. The lightweight
prosthesis for polio-afflicted children developed by S
C Lakkad of the department of aerospace engineering, for
instance, now allows children to run around; a foot-operated
tool attached to a personal computer works as a communicator
for children with cerebral palsy. Similarly, the LPG kitchen
stove for the blind developed by G G Ray, a professor
with the Industrial Design Centre, has been distributed
to several blind people through the National Association
for the Blind.
Some faculty members working with the centre for technology
alternatives for rural applications (CTARA) have also
been involved in developing technologies specifically
for rural India. Aaqua, developed by Krithi Ramamritham,
is a mobile portal giving out information to farmers;
N G Shah from CTARA has devised several technologies to
enhance industrialisation in rural areas.
On the other hand, certain innovations are currently being
transferred to industry for trial runs. For instance,
a silicon locket, the size of a toffee, can continuously
generate ECG reports and a built-in algorithm can sound
off an alarm to the doctor in case of an emergency.
The book is part of our ongoing efforts to disseminate
results and attract bright young minds to research at
IIT-Bombay . This would ensure that our research makes
a difference, Rangan Banerjee , dean (research and development
), sa
