IISc students to find mentors in alumni
Bangalore: Research incubated in Indian Institute of Science
(IISc) labs has a better chance of turning into a commercial
proposition, thanks to a mentoring initiative launched
on Saturday.
Under this unique, online mentoring system—IIScAA
Knowledge Exchange Programme — about 600 top professionals,
all IISc alumni, will guide/advise students. Entrepreneurs,
technocrats, scientists and academicians from around the
world will connect with upcoming entrepreneurs, students
and research scholars and help them launch start-ups,
turn their research into viable technology ventures, and
help them take the right decisions to advance their careers.
K R Srinivasan, president of the IISc Alumni Association
(IIScAA), said: “Mentoring the next generation of
Indian researchers and entrepreneurs is much needed today,
and this programme is the perfect way to achieve that.”
In this model, mentors will be in regular contact with
their proteges and dedicate an hour or two each week,
provide concrete suggestions, offer advice based on their
own experience, and suggest actions that will be beneficial
to the protege. The system will ensure secure and private
interactions between the mentors and the proteges. Based
on the areas of interest for mentorship, the software
tool behind the programme will present detailed profiles
of mentors. The proteges can choose one or more mentors
from those presented and begin the interaction. Thus,
the programme matches the request with expertise. To begin
with, the IIScAA online mentoring will be utilized for
the IISc community and progressively expanded to include
non-IISc community members.
Ravishankar Gundlapalli, MD of Parjanya Technologies,
the company which developed the software for the online
mentoring, believes IISc will set a trend in the country.
