Varsities looking at legal recourse
DEEMED OR DOOMED
Bangalore: Two days after the HRD ministry stripped them
of the deemed university tag, they are exploring legal
options.
R L Jalappa of Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education
and Research said: We have consulted some of the senior-most
lawyers in Delhi. They have advised us to wait till Monday,
when the Supreme Court will hear the issue. We will decide
what to do after that. A legal battle is the only way
out.
Both Christ University and Devaraj Urs Academy asserted
on Thursday that their institutions are not family businesses
. Our fee fixation committee is chaired by a retired Chief
Justice of India. Everything is working meticulously ,
said Jalappa.
Another probable point of defence is the UGC committees
review report. A 12-member review committee visited and
gave us a report recommending deemed university status.
Suddenly, they have decided to take away that status.
We are shocked and did not expect this. We were granted
that status for five years, said Fr Jose of Christ University.
It took me eleven months to get a favourable statement
from the UGC board. This is despite the fact that I am
a member of the ruling party. If I had used influence,
I would have got it in a couple of months. This itself
is proof of the authenticity of the status, said Jalappa.
The explanatory statement that Christ University released
to TOI states the institution strictly observed UGC regulations
in its conduct as a university with regard to meetings
of authorities, disclosure of information and other matters
.
Santosh M S, joint associate registrar, Jain University,
said they will ask the HRD ministry for a copy of the
affidavit . We want to know the grounds on which are we
being derecognized. We will send our representation to
the ministry , to which we expect a reply . Till now,
nobody has been available for a talk, he said.
