In the works: A univ for tech education
Mumbai: The high-profile higher and technical education
minister Rajesh Tope has moved a proposal for setting
up an independent university exclusively to promote technical
education at an estimated cost of Rs 320 crore.
We have a separate university for medical courses. Its
performance is good. Therefore, it was felt that Maharashtra
should have an independent university for technical education.
We will soon move a proposal before the cabinet. If all
goes well, we will set up the new university from the
next academic session either at Mumbai or Pune, a senior
official told TOI on Thursday.
Prima facie, the official said, since the traditional
universities were over-burdened with the routine courses,
they were unable to devote themselves to the development
of technical education.
We have 14 government medical colleges and well over 35
private colleges, which were affiliated to the traditional
universities . But with the setting up of the Maharashtra
university of health sciences, it was possible to develop
new courses in the field of education. We feel that if
we set up a separate university for technical education,
our courses will be improved further, the official said.
Secondly, the official said, at a time when there is a
race for super-specialisation in all sectors, it would
not be appropriate to be associated with traditional universities
. Either we should give autonomy or bring in all the engineering
colleges under one umbrella. We thought that a new university
would be a better option, the official said.
The official said since most of the technical institutions
are located either in Mumbai or Pune, it would be better
if the new university too is located here.
The cabinet will take a decision about the venue of the
new university. But there will be regional centres at
all the revenue headquarters, he said.
According to the action plan, 264 engineering colleges,
116 pharmacy colleges, 44 architecture, eight hotel management,
295 business administration and 90 institutions imparting
education in computer applications, with a total of three
lakh students, will be affiliated to the proposed university.
