Also In The Line
3 varsities put off exams
Hyderabad: Osmania University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological
University (JNTU) and Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University
on Thursday decided to postpone their semester exams until
further notice.
The higher education department may also postpone the
common entrance tests, expected to begin in the first
week of May, by at least a week. There are indications
that Eamcet for admissions into engineering , agriculture
and medical colleges may be held only by the end of May
or beginning of June.
Interestingly, M Kodandaram, JAC convener, made representations
to secretary, Board of Intermediate Examinations and director
, Board of government examinations which conducts SSC,
to postpone the exams scheduled to be held on March 3
and March 22 respectively.
Kodandaram also said that he will make further representations
to higher education and secondary education ministers
to postpone the exams. The two departments had earlier
announced that there will be no postponement of IPE and
SSC exams. JAC members said that they will seek indefinite
postponement of all exams till the Centre announces its
decision on Telangana.
On Thursday, OU students held a protest before the University
College of Engineering demanding postponement of their
examination . The authorities then postponed all the exams
of the autonomous engineering college situated on the
campus and announced that their academic schedule will
begin on January 25. The examinations of affiliated engineering
colleges will continue as per schedule, university officials
clarified. The university had on Wednesday postponed the
examinations of all its courses other than engineering,
pharmacy and hotel management. The Ist,IInd,IIIrd and
IVth year bachelor of fine arts, painting, sculpture and
printmaking , first and second-year MA and MCJ semester
exams of Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University were also
postponed on Thursday. JNTU, Hyderabad , however, postponed
only the examinations which were to be held on January
21.
The university authorities have also decided to work for
two extra weeks in May to make up for the lost teaching
hours. The university might have to postpone the last
working day from end of April to second week of May to
complete portions. We are also thinking of holding examinations
a little late in the next semester so that students will
get enough time to study, said D N Reddy, VC of JNTU.
Meanwhile, K C Reddy, chairman , state council of higher
education , declared that the universities in the state
should think of extending the last date of instruction
by one month to complete the portions . The VCs of all
the universities in the state will meet with the governor
to discuss how to go about with the academic schedule
to prevent students from losing a year.
