Computers for autistic kids in SSC
Mumbai: From this academic year, the state board will
allow autistic children to use computers and calculators
for the all-important Class X exams. This is among the
nine concessions that the board has extended to autistic
children studying in classes IX and X.
At a press meet on Wednesday , the Forum for Autism, a
support group of parents, welcomed the move. From February
1, students desirous of applying for the concessions should
approach the certifying centres at Sion and Nair Hospitals
. We need a letter and assessment from the schools as
well as parents before we do our evaluation, said Dr H
Shah from Nair Hospital.
The other concessions include allowing the child to appear
for the exam in their own schools, 20 minutes extra per
hour of the exam, permission to give oral answers in practical
exams, a maximum of 20 grace marks if the child fails
and provision to select languages or lower level maths.
However, an expert said that parents should not stop working
with children just because of the concessions.
