275 seats added to PG medical courses
in Gujarat
Ahmedabad: Here is some good news for those dreaming of
a career as super-specialist doctors as the seats are
slated to increase by 275 in Gujarat for post graduate
(PG) medical course.
This will benefit students in all government medical colleges.
Of these, 165 seats have been increased by the Medical
Council of India (MCI).
The state government had sent a proposal to MCI in this
regard.
Sources said, by February-end the permission will come
through. For instance, BJ Medical College will see an
increase of 39 seats.
However, the mandatory inspection to be carried out by
MCI, has yet not been conducted.
For the first time ever this stupendous hike in seats
is coming through. Till date, 1,050 seats were available
for PG medical courses. The increase in these seats are
linked to promotion of professors.
According to MCI norms, associate professors with four
years of experience will now be promoted as professors.
Though, there will be no financial benefits with this
promotion. This round of promotions will mean that PG
seats will also increase by the same number.
Health department sources said: “At BJ Medical College,
Vadodara Medical College, Jamnagar Medical College, Bhavnagar
Medical College, Surat Medical College and Rajkot Medical
College more than 110 associate professors will be promoted
as professors.”
While, sources in the state education department said,
“All formalities are over. This will mean that 110
more seats for PG (medical) courses will be available.”
MCI member, HP Bhalodia, said: “Students will get
admission in all the 275 seats from this academic year.
The permission is expected to come through by February.
New norms of MCI benefited Gujarat because we were quick
to follow up on the changes effected by the council.”
