You can opt for media studies in Class XI itself

WRITE CHOICE?

Mumbai: Here’s one more rabbit out of the CBSE board’s hat. The latest in a series of education reforms announced by the CBSE involves introducing a brand new course in media studies for classes XI and XII. You can now choose either the traditional science, humanities or commerce, or the newly introduced courses in film appreciation, journalism, advertising, radio and television.

The board is in talks with filmmaker Subhash Ghai’s Whistling Woods International — an institute for film, television, animation and media arts — about the course curriculum. Both CBSE and Whistling Woods plan to frame the syllabus together.

A student who completes the course will get a certificate both from the CBSE board as well as from Whistling Woods. Incidentally, a few years ago, the board introduced a new course in Financial Markets Management jointly with the National Stock Exchange. The CBSE hopes to provide students with the option of a vocational education.

The board plans to introduce media studies both as an elective subject, which students from all streams can opt for, as well as a full-fledged course for classes XI and XII.

The board plans to introduce the course as a pilot in 20 schools across the country starting 2010, and to all schools by 2011. The board is finetuning the curriculum.

“It’s important to offer students an alternative to mainstream courses, and make vocational education attractive for students,’’ said Avnita Bir, principal of RN Podar School, Santa Cruz.“The CBSE had the necessary approval to start the course in 2006, but they had not found the right people to partner with,’’ said Bir, adding that this was the best time to introduce the course, as the board was in the midst of working on a whole host of bold new moves, from making the Class X board exam optional to replacing marks with a process of continuous and comprehensive evaluation.

The CBSE board will source its own faculty for the course, while Whistling Woods will help train the faculty.
