Govt medical colleges may be told to adopt districts

Pune: Medical education and horticulture minister Vijaykumar Gavit on Thursday said that government medical colleges in the state will soon be told to adopt a district and, thereby, the responsibility of providing medical care to its rural interiors. The minister added that discussions were on to see whether private hospitals in respective areas, too, could be roped in to join the venture.

A proposal to this effect is under consideration and the ministry will soon come forward with an action plan to implement it in the state, he said. Gavit was speaking to reporters after inaugurating the newly-built gymnasium of the B J Medical College. The gymnasium has been donated to the students of B J Medical college jointly by the Sancheti Sports Medicine Division, a unit of Sancheti hospital, and the B J Medical Staff and Alumni Association.

Asked whether the state would introduce the newly-designed medical degree course, meant especially to serve rural people, Gavit said, The course could be implemented if the funds are made available by the Centre. It will be, too, premature to say anything at this stage as the proposal is being discussed by the Union government and the Medical Council of India .

At present, efforts are on to fill all vacant posts of medical teachers, including lecturers , associate professors and professors, at all government medical colleges in the state. Similarly, 90 percent of the posts filled on contract basis , will also be regularised by March-end , Gavit said.

The minister said a total of 10 posts of deans for medical colleges were vacant at present . Of them, four will be filled through promotions, while the rest, through MPSC selections. The state government is also thinking of raising the retirement age of medical teachers from 58 to 62, to check the mass exodus of teachers. The number of teachers putting in their papers is growing. We have, therefore, decided to raise the retirement age. Also, it is being decided whether to keep the retirement age at 62 or 65, Gavit said.

The ministry is also considering to form research cells to monitor progress of medical colleges. Research on district-specific diseases and outbreaks will be given priority. Facilities will be provided to such research works, he added.
