MCI plans 300 rural med colleges

New Delhi: The Medical Council of India (MCI) on Friday proposed setting up of 300 medical colleges for a four-year Bachelors in Rural Healthcare course to educate rural students and deploy them there to provide basic healthcare to villagers. There are around 300 districts in our country where there are no medical colleges and we have proposed a medical college in each district, MCI president Ketan Desai said.

These doctors will study in rural areas and be posted there. They will be governed by state medical councils but will not be registered under the Indian Medical registry, Desai said.

With most MBBS doctors refusing to work in far-flung areas, the project received a thumbs up from 250 experts, V-Cs , deans of medical colleges and directors of medical education , gathered in Delhi for a twoday national consultancy. According to the Planning Commission, India is short of 6 lakh doctors, 10 lakh nurses and 2 lakh dental surgeons. Patient-doctor ratio is dismalfor every 10,000 Indians, there is one doctor , the ratio is six times lower in rural areas. The Centre says it can now produce 145,000 rural doctors through this truncated course designed after the Chinese barefoot doctors .

Meanwhile, the health ministry and the railways have signed an agreement to set up 500 hospitals, diagnostic centres and super-specialty hospitals on vacant rail land. TNN & AGENCIES

CBSE to set questions for Class IX exams

New Delhi: After making the Class X board examination optional from next year, the CBSE has decided to set questions for Class IX, presently conducted by affiliated schools, to bring uniformity in the system and ensure better assessment of students. The CBSE has already introduced Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluations (CCE), a system of schoolbased evaluation of Class IX students. The CCE covers curricular activities, besides core areas of subjects being studied in the classes.
