Jr colleges refuse to wait for final list
Mumbai: While online admissions to junior college have
been dragging on for months on endthanks to protracted
litigation and illdrafted government policiesmost institutes
have started their Std-XI classes, even before all their
seats have been filled up.
Reason: The endless wait for the admission process to
get over has resulted in such a waste of time for the
new academic session that the colleges cannot afford to
push back the schedule any longer.
For instance, St Xaviers College began its Std-XI classes
last Friday. There are about 20 seats that are yet to
be filled. It did not make sense to hold back classes
for 600 students, for the sake of 20.I dont think teachers
will be able to make up for the lost time, but they will
certainly try their best, said Fr Frazer Mascarenhas,
principal of St Xaviers College.
Even HR College of Commerce and Economics at Churchgate
has started its new Std XI session. Classes for Std XI
began in full swing from August 25 and the attendance
has been 100%.In fact, for our students who had got through
under various quotas though they had not scored particularly
well, we started classes in the beginning of August, said
Indu Shahani, principal of the college.
Those institutes that have not started their new session
yet, will do so shortly. We hope to begin by September
3 and not wait for all the vacant seats to fill. The past
three months have been an absolute waste of time and we
do not want to push back the academic session any further
or our teachers would find it difficult to finish the
syllabi on time, said Marie Fernandes, principal of St
Andrews College in Bandra.
Some of the colleges did consider waiting for everyone,
but even for them, the schdedule is becoming too tight.
We were waiting for the last list, which will be declared
on Tuesday. We have not started our classes so that none
of the students misses any lesson. However, we will begin
on September 3 and not wait any further, Vijay Joshi,
principal of K J Somaiya College.
Besides the admission chaos, the government has not given
any directive on how to completing the syllabi, says Kirti
Narain, principal of Jai Hind College that plans to start
its session by September 2.I will convene a meeting with
teachers, students and parents to work out how to cover
the syllabus in time. Well probably have to take classes
during vacations and a few extra lectures every day, said
Ruia College principal Suhas Pednekar.
