Syllabus worries lead some colleges to open
Mumbai: Even as students still anxiously await the fifth
and last merit list under the general category for a seat
in a college of their choice, colleges are wondering when
they can start lectures for the new batch and how the
syllabus will be completed. With no notification from
the education department, confusion reigns supreme, some
colleges deciding to start classes from Wednesday.
Last year, due to the 90:10 imbroglio, the government
had ordered the first unit test to be scrapped and also
curtailed part of the syllabus. This year too, many colleges
are anticipating the same move. Last year, the education
board had given us proper instructions about scrapping
the first unit test, portion that can be curtailed and
the holidays that will be utilised for conducting extra
lectures. This year, as of now we have no confirmation
from the board but are assuming it will be similar, said
Marie Fernandes, principal of St Andrews College in Bandra.
Decisions on the syllabus to be followed and examinations
will be taken immediately after the online admission process
is over. The portion will not be curtailed this year and
colleges will manage to complete the portion on time with
the help of extra lectures. By September 1,all principals
will be notified about the schedule, said Sunil R Chouhan,
deputy director (school education).
Colleges, on the other hand, are also confused about when
to start lectures for class XI. Since only two lists came
out in the bifocal category, we still have seats left
and those who got admission under the general category
are now asking for those seats. We will have to settle
this before classes start, said Kavita Rege, principal
of Sathaye College, Vile Parle. Some lecturers made use
of this time in concentrating extra on class XII students.
This way, they will have more time to dedicate for class
XI students when we start, said Shobhana Vasudevan, principal
of Podar College, Santacruz.
Meanwhile, H R College has decided to start lectures on
Wednesday itself. Subjects like Mathematics and Accountancy
take time and since this is the foundation year, we cant
even curtail the portion. We will start classes now and
wait and make changes as per the government notification
later, said Deepika Bhatia, vice-principal. At St. Xaviers
College, the orientation programme will take place over
the next two days. Once we get proper intimation from
the education board, we will start lectures immediately,
said Father Frazer Mascarenhas.
Classrooms, cool spots & canteen top seniors
wishlist for freshers
With about 2 lakh freshers set to enter college in the
next one week, seniors have a list of things to do once
you enter college for them.
The first thing to do is enroll yourself in a committee
of your like and soon you will be involved in many activites
taking place on the campus, said Sahil Raina, a third-year
student of H R College. Similar sentiments were shared
by Akhilesh Ram of Jai Hind College who added, Committees
let students be in touch with others with similar tastes.
Other than the usual fresher parties and class trips,
freshers are advised to explore the college campus to
find the hidden treasures.Explore all classrooms on day
one itself. Lectures in colleges might not be conducted
in the same class always so one should know where the
rest of the classes are. Next most important is the canteen
and its food. Also, once you check the lengths and breadths
of the college, you will bump into cool hang-out points
to spend time when youre not in class, said Jude Dsouza,
a student of St Xaviers College.
Making friends is important but the right kind of friends
is even more important, say seniors. Take a good look
at your classmates and point out the two extremes. The
most fun-loving and stress-free classmate with whom you
will have most fun throughout college, and the nerd should
be your friends, the latter for the notes you will surely
miss, said Arpeeta Modi, a third-year student of K J Somaiya
College.
While the list goes on, the most important is to have
a lot of fun. |
