Many seats are still vacant in top colleges
Mumbai: Even as most city colleges will remain shut for
Pateti on Thursday, anxious junior college aspirants would
be doing the rounds of various colleges where the fourth
merit listthe second list in the general categoryis to
be put up at 5 pm. In what comes as a welcome relief for
students who are still hoping to get into a college of
their choice, almost all top colleges have ample seats
left in all streams still.
So many students came to us over the past few weeks, complaining
that only the fast filling seats in all top colleges.
They didn’t understand that almost 60,000 students
had finished seeking admission in their preferred colleges
offline under various quotas and the same students had
also applied to the general stream online, said a senior
official at the deputy director (school education) office.
These seats are now going vacant. As a result, there are
many seats left in all the colleges, the official added.
After admissions to the first general merit list got over
on August 13, a total of 56,703 students did not report
for admissions at various colleges. Earlier, after the
first two merit lists under the bifocal category were
announced, close to 10,500 students did not show up to
confirm their admissions. Its little wonder then, that
colleges like Ruparel, Ruia, Jai Hind, KC, NM and RA Podar
still have ample seats left for students even after the
announcement of the fourth merit list.
All the seats that were left vacant under the bifocal
category have now been converted to general category seats.
Individual colleges now have the option of filling their
vacant seats under bifocal courses once colleges start
in full strength, said the official. Students, whose name
appears in the fourth merit list and want to move to a
college of their choice under the betterment system, must
cancel the admission online they have already taken in
another college, said the official.
For payment of fees and confirmation of admissions, students,
whose names appear in the fourth merit list, can go to
the respective colleges from August 20 to 23.
After the announcement of the third merit list, many students
had showed up on the first day itself and we could not
accommodate all of them on the same day. Many were sent
back. Hopefully, theyll come in batches this time. This
will help us finish the process faster and more efficiently,
said a professor who is in charge of the admission procedure.
The fifth and last merit list will be released on August
26 and all colleges will have to announce their list of
vacant seats by August 31.
