2,200 BEd seats go vacant
Ahmedabad: The popularity of BEd course among students
seems to have taken a severe beating as 2,200 seats in
92 BEd colleges affiliated with Gujarat University are
lying vacant this year. This has created a crisis situation
for BEd colleges as lack of admission may push them on
the brink of closure.
Taking a serious note of this, the university has taken
three decisions to deal with the crisis. Weve decided
to do away with 20 per cent quota for fresher students,
allowing them admission on every seat. Secondly, it has
been decided to give opportunity to those students who
failed to submit forms in the management quota to submit
their forms again. Third and most important decision is
to increase seats in science and maths, said university
vice-chancellor Parimal Trivedi.
The university decided to act after receiving representations
from the trustees of its affiliated BEd colleges who presented
the grim picture due to lack of admission. Though the
trustees urged the university authorities to delegate
the admission process to their respective colleges, the
university turned down the proposal, stating that the
right to conduct admission was to be retained by its own
admission committee.
