Single entrance test for medical courses from 11
Will Spare Students Of Date-Clash,Travel Headaches
New Delhi/Bangalore: Come 2011 and there will be only
one common entrance test each for over 31,000 MBBS seats
and over 11,000 MD seats in all medical colleges in the
country.
This important decision, taken by the Medical Council
of India (MCI) and accepted by the Union health ministry,
was conveyed to the Supreme Court on Friday, bringing
huge relief to lakhs of aspiring doctors.
Earlier, students wanting to take up courses in medicine
had to appear in at least five to six entrance tests for
various colleges and worry about attendant problems like
clash of exam dates as well as travel to distant places
for counselling for allotment of seats.
But from 2011, there will be just one entrance test conducted
by CBSE each for MBBS and MD courses offered by 271 medical
colleges: 138 government-run and 133 under private managements.
These colleges together offer over 31,000 seats for MBBS
courses and another 11,000 for P-G.
The confusion caused by multiple entrance tests and counselling
saw hundreds of students rush to the Supreme Court every
year, complaining about the system where they were left
high and dry even for making a single mistake in their
choices.
Dr Devi Shetty, a member of the six-member National Council
for Human Resources in Health, told TOI: At present, a
student writes nearly 20 different entrance tests for
undergraduate courses and nearly 25 tests for post-graduate
medical courses. The single entrance test is a boon to
lakhs of students, especially in our villages who cannot
travel to different cities to write multiple entrance
tests. There will be hundreds of centres in every district
to enable students to write the test. A student in Raichur
cannot travel to Mumbai, Puducherry and Delhi to write
entrance tests.
Making it clear there will be no alternative admission
tests, Dr Shetty said the states will continue to decide
the seat matrix, number of seats and other admission processes,
including quota. What will be common to all the medical
aspirants is the test that will be conducted by the Central
Board for Secondary Education.
Our aim is to ensure that no student is deprived of studying
in his dream college, Dr Shetty said.
By routing the decision on medical entrance tests through
the Supreme Court, the six-member Centre-appointed National
Council for Human Resources in Health has insulated the
move from legal wrangles.
A petition filed by Simran Jain, through advocate ADN
Rao, had sought a directive from the apex court to MCI
and the Centre for a singlewindow system for admissions.
