Colleges all set to start classes
Mumbai: Its not just students who are anxious to get back
inside the classrooms. Teachers and colleges too are eager
to get on with the academic session at the earliest.
The fourth merit list will only be out on August 19. This
will be followed by a fifth merit list, but colleges are
not ready to waste any more time and have decided to start
classes before September.
We havent received any notification from the government
on when the classes should commence. We might start lectures
after at least 90% of the seats are taken, said Pradeep
Kulkarni, principal of Ruparel College in Matunga. He
added that a clearer picture will emerge once the fourth
merit list is out. Most colleges might not wait for the
fifth merit list and may start teaching, he said.
In case of minority colleges, the scenario is a little
different. Fifty per cent of our seats are already taken
due to the quota and we should be able to fill up 80-85
% of the seats in this list, said Marie Fernandes, principal
of St Andrews College in Bandra. We had earlier planned
to start Std XI classes on August 16, but that would have
been a little too early. Lectures should start by August
25-26, Fernandes added. H R College has decided to make
the best of the time at hand. Under the minority quota,
we gave admission to students with 70% marks while the
scores of those in the general category are in the range
of 85-90 %, said principal Indu Shahani. We have already
started a form of test-series for students with 70% scores.
These kids have been provided with self-study material
so that they are up to speed when the classes commence,
Shahani said, adding that students have begun enrolling
for the colleges various extra-curricular clubs.
Even those who have just submitted their forms are lining
up to participate in the several activities that we offer. Our
efforts are aimed at saving time, she added.
