Students can look forward to 174 new colleges
Mumbai: The University of Mumbai (MU) is likely to expand
the number of seats it offers in the coming academic year
by 25% to 30% as the management council, the highest decision-making
body of the varsity, cleared the proposal to start 174
new colleges for the next academic year. Most of the colleges
are in traditional arts, science and commerce streams.
Among professional colleges, most new applications are
from colleges wanting to offer management courses, followed
by engineering,pharmacy,law and architecture.The university
had received 177 proposals but accepted 174 of them.
Most colleges have been approved for Thane district, followed
by Mumbai (town and suburbs),where a total of 46 colleges
have been recommended to be started (see box).University
registrar L R Mane said this time, the perspective plan
to set up new colleges had been drawn up after assessing
the district-level requirement.Earlier,it was based on
equal distribution of disciplines in each district.MU
officials have realised that there are certain disciplines
where managements had started colleges in certain streams, despite
there being no demand for them. For instance,in certain
districts, there are many BEd colleges where seats are
lying vacant. So,it made sense to assess the requirement
before drawing up the perspective plan, said a management
council member.
We are aware of the educational needs, but the state does
not recognise them.On one hand,it speaks of increasing
access and on the other,it does not start new colleges, nor
does it approve opening of unaided colleges, said a university
official.
