Engg colleges frown at marginal fee hike
Hyderabad: The state government on Thursday announced
a marginal increase of Rs 800 in the fee for engineering, pharmacy
and architecture courses for merit category seats. The
fee per annum for engineering colleges was increased from
Rs 30,200 to Rs 31,000.The fee for management quota seats
was also increased from Rs 91,700 to Rs 95,000.
For MBA and MCA colleges, the fee was increased from Rs
26,700 per annum to Rs 27,000 for merit seats. For management
quota seats, the fee was increased from Rs 73,100 to Rs
78,000 per annum.
Meanwhile,as a relief to college managements,the state
government introduced a third category of seats called
the NRI quota.
Fifty per cent of the total number of management seats
in each of the colleges will be reserved for NRI students. The
fee structure for these seats will be $ 5,000 (Rs 2.5
lakh), K C Reddy, chairman,AP State Council of Higher Education
(APSCHE) said.
According to APSCHE officials,Admission and Fee Regulatory
Committees (AFRC) decision has brought out a 3.2 per cent
increase in average fee of engineering colleges. In MBA
and MCA colleges, the average fee has increased by 4 per
cent due to the fee hike, officials said.
AFRC took the decision based on the audit reports submitted
by some of the colleges. There are colleges which made
a profit of Rs 3 crore with the existing fee structure,
Reddy said.
Interestingly, the decision to reintroduce third category
seats which was in use way back in 1993 has come as a
relief to the top 20 colleges in the state located in
the city, who get several applications from NRI students.
Meanwhile, representatives of Consortium of Private Engineering
Colleges Managements Association (CPECMA) said that they
would approach the high court challenging the state governments
decision on fee.
We wanted uniform fee structure and a 10 per cent increase
in fee for convener quota seats. We will move the court
challenging the orders soon, K V K Rao,a representative
of managements said.CPECMA has called for a general body
meeting on August 8 to decide on the future course of
action.
Meanwhile, the colleges also demanded for the release of
pending funds under the fee reimbursement scheme. The colleges
are yet to get Rs 2,000 crore from the government under
the scheme.
