Many seats still vacant
More Than 2,700 Seats In Reckoning For Second List
Mumbai: If you have been hoping to get one of the remaining
seats available in the second list under the bifocal category, theres
good news. There were more than 2,700 seats going abegging
as of Monday.
Over 31,000 students had applied for the 7,906 seats available
and 7,860 seats had already been allotted to students
in the fist merit lists itself.Monday was the last day
for these applicants to pay fees at the colleges but about
2,667 students have still not submitted their applications
and fees.
I am truly surprised that students chose to let go of
a seat under the bifocal category, when thousands of students
are still hopeful of getting that very seat, said Kavita
Rege, principal of Sathaye College in Vile Parle.Of the
240 seats allotted by her college to applicants in the
first merit list itself, only 195 students had submitted
their applications by Monday evening.Rege was among many
city principals to be surprised by the trend.
At Jai Hind College, about 75% of the seats allotted in
the first merit list were confirmed.Similarly,at D G Ruparel
College, which is one of the colleges given topmost priority
by students,22 seats went unfilled.Either students are
being very laid back about this system,or they have already
been allotted seats in other colleges of their choice
under other quotas. There can be no other explanation.Since
this year the admission system went online, theres no chance
that students got through more than one college.I just
hope students know what they are doing, said another principal.
At SIES College in Sion, the office administration also
made phone calls to those applicants who failed to show
till the last day. Some students said they couldnt get
hold of the original of their results so we still asked
them to come and submit the rest of the application form.We
can wait till they get their original marksheet. Some said
theyll come before the day ends, still 5-6 seats were left
vacant in both the electronics and computer science courses,
said principal Harsha Mehta.
This might have happened since many students must have
also applied under a minority or management quota in various
colleges.Since those lists came out before the first merit
list, theres a good chance they have already secured admission
elsewhere, said a senior official from the school education
board. Some educationists also mentioned that in case a
student hasnt got through the college of their choice
or those who got allotted a seat in some lesser known
college, they might have chosen to wait and re-apply in
the colleges of their choice when the vacant seats are
declared.
While the state education department has already declared
how many seats still vacant for the second merit list, colleges
have been given time till Tuesday afternoon to submit
the exact number of seats available in each of the courses,to
the department. The second merit list (bifocal) will be
out on August 5 at 5 pm.
Hope Lives For The Second List
Total seats available under the bifocal courses 12,530

Total students who were allotted seats in the first merit
list 7,859
Students who submitted their applications 5,148

Seats remaining for the second merit list 2,713
