Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS)

Organization

Sevagram is in the state of Maharashtra and is located right at the Center of Indian Map. It is 80 kilometers from Nagpur, which is the nearest airport. The district headquarter, Wardha is ten kilometers from Sevagram.

The Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (MGIMS) and the Kasturba Hospital, is run by the Kasturba Health Society. The Society was established in 1964 under the Societies Registration Act. Before the Society was formed, the Kasturba Hospital (started in 1945) was run by the Gandhi National Memorial Trust (also called Gandhi Smarak Nidhi). At the Society's formation, the Gandhi National Memorial Trust handed over to it all the properties of the Kasturba Hospital together with the responsibility of running the Kasturba Hospital.

The MGIMS was earlier affiliated to the Nagpur University since its inception in 1969 till 1997. From 1998 the MGIMS has been affiliated to the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nasik. The MGIMS admits 65 medical students on the basis of a pre-medical entrance test (in 2006, close to 10,000 medical aspirants took the test). The institute also offers post-graduation in all major clinical and basic sciences disciplines.

The Kasturba Hospital is a 648-bed hospital, located in Sevagram, about 8 kms from Wardha town. The hospital offers tertiary care healthcare facilities to rural patients.

The Kasturba Health Society administers the institute through three agencies:

 The Governing Council
 The Local Managing Committee
 The Standing Finance Committee

Code of Conduct

Students admitted to the Institute are expected to:

 lead simple life
 wear khadi clothes
 take vegetarian meals
eschew smoking, drinking alcohol and taking any other intoxicants
participate in community prayer, shramdan (voluntary labour) and such other activities as may be    prescribed from time to time.

Residing in the hostels of the Institute is compulsory for all students.

Students after admission to the Institute are given an Orientation Training Course for a fortnight in Sevagram Ashram to introduce them to Gandhian ideology. As the camp is compulsory, the student who is found unable to adjust to the environment, his/her admission may be cancelled.

Heritage and History of MGIMS

The name of the institute itself speaks of its historical roots. These roots go back to the time of Indian Independence Movement, and to a place originally called Shegaon, now known as Sevagram.

It was 1936, when Mahatma Gandhi left Sabarmati ashram and set up his ashram in Sevagram, a small village in Wardha town in Maharashtra. Gandhi directed the independence movement of the country from here. This has immortalized Sevagram in the history of the Nation.

In line with Lal Bahadur Shastri's foresight, in 1969, and as a part of Gandhi Centenary Program, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences was proposed to be set up on the soil of Sevagram. After the approval of the Planning Commision and with the blessings of the President and the Prime Minister of the country the institute was formed. It was decided that the Government of India, Maharashtra Government and the Kasturba Health society would share the expenditure on it in the proportion of 50:25:25.

When the first batch of 60 students was enrolled in the year 1969, MGIMS came up as independent India's first attempt give a new direction to rural health. Today it boasts of having groomed more than 2000 doctors. After more than three decades of its birth, MGIMS has come a long way. From a mere 15 bedded hospital to its 648 beds and a hospital with state of the art facilities, MGIMS has created its own small history. In 2005-2006, about 3.67 million patients attended the out patient department of the institute. More than thirty thousand patients were admitted during this period.

MGIMS has grown into an institute nursing the rural community with nominal fees. It has also been working towards its community oriented mission by working strongly with its alcohol and drug de-addiction centre, which is now in its eighth year. It has also implemented the concept of health insurance in rural areas. In 2005-06 as many as 39258 families around Sevagram have availed this facility.
